Taiwan
Taiwan is the island where the Republic of China can be found. Before World War II, there was a Chinese Civil War, between Communist (Red) Chinese forces under Mao Zedong and Nationalist (White) Chinese forces led by Chiang Kai-shek. During World War II, they paused their hostilities to unite against Japan's aggressions. With the conclusion of the war, they returned to their fighting. The Nationalist forces eventually lost in 1949, retreating to Taiwan and setting up their own government. The Communist government would become the People's Republic of China.

Taiwan would become a frequent topic on Reagan's radio show. In 1979, the Jimmy Carter presidency would officially end the United States recognition of Taiwan/Republic of China in favor of stronger ties with the People's Republic of China.
